Sudut Pandangan Bali

SUDUT PANDANGAN BALI (Perspectives of Bali) is an ongoing artistic and ethnographic fieldwork project exploring performed culture, invented traditions, and tourist art in the context of postcolonial mass tourism and global mobility.

The project approaches travel both as an artistic practice and as a position from which to observe and engage with a place.

I take my position as a temporary visitor — mobile, partial, and inevitably shaped by my own perspective — as a starting point.

Moving through spaces shaped by tourism, I use the camera to slow down and notice details that might otherwise escape attention. At the same time, the research explores how places are staged, presented, and imagined through tourism, and how these representations circulate online.

Smartphones and social media have become part of this inquiry:

› How do visitors capture and perform their encounters with a place?
› Which attitudes become visible through these images?
› How do people reproduce, transform, or challenge existing tourist imaginaries as they create, share, and respond to representations of a place like Bali?

The immediacy of digital images can create a sense of proximity to a place without necessarily bringing us closer to understanding it. The project moves between physical encounters, mediated representations, and the circulation of images, combining fieldwork and audiovisual observation with an exploration of online platforms and discourse.

Other parts of the research respond to these representations through performative re-enactments, taking the gestures and visual conventions of tourist and influencer imagery as material for artistic inquiry.

The word perspectives reflects this interest in multiple, sometimes contradictory ways of seeing and representing the same place — including questioning my own position behind the camera.
